Safety picks the route.
Everything Hopalong does is about getting you there and back safely, in plain view of where its information comes from.
Safest route
Routes are colored by police-reported incidents per resident: town by town as each state's FBI data arrives (now filling in across the country), and street by street in Pittsburgh, Philadelphia and Allentown.
Night walks
After sunset, walks and rides prefer streets mapped as lit, show places open right now along the way, and tell you when to leave to finish before dark.
Weather and icy hills
Forecasts for each part of the trip at the hour you'll be there. When roads may freeze, routes with fewer steep hills come first.
Crash and deer warnings
A spoken heads-up before fatal-crash spots nationwide, plus serious-injury and deer-crash spots in Pennsylvania.
Live road reports
Crashes, police, fires and closures reported by drivers in seconds. If an emergency is ahead, Hopalong offers a way around it.
SOS and campus help
Hold for 3 seconds to see your address and call or text 911. Near any of 3,906 US colleges, campus police too, wherever we've checked the number on the school's own page.
Check on me
Someone you trust knows when you arrive, and is warned if you don't. Turn it on for every trip if you like.
Keeps going without signal
In tunnels and dead zones the route is already on your phone, so turns are still called out.

Every US college, on every student's map.

Everything it does
All in the app today. Tap any feature to see what it does.
Driving
๐ก๏ธ Safest, Fastest or Fuel saver
Pick what matters most. Safest takes the route with the fewest reported incidents, as long as it doesn't add more than the extra time you allow. Fuel saver picks the route likely to burn the least gas.
๐จ Safety color on every route
Each route card shows how much of the trip passes places with more police-reported incidents per resident: town by town as each state's FBI data arrives (now filling in across the country), and street by street in Pittsburgh, Philadelphia and Allentown. Towns without their own police data use a county estimate, marked as such.
๐ฆ Crash and deer warnings
A voice warns you before stretches where fatal crashes cluster (NHTSA records, nationwide) and, in Pennsylvania, serious-injury and deer crashes (PennDOT records). Deer warnings play from dusk to dawn, and all day in October to December.
๐จ Steers around emergencies
If police activity, a fire or a closed road is reported on your route, the app asks "Take a safer route?" and switches unless you say no.
๐ฆ Speed and speed limits
A speedometer and the posted limit stay on screen. Where no limit is mapped, it shows a typical legal default, clearly marked as "likely".
โฐ Arrive on time
Set an arrive-by time and every route shows when to leave, with spare time built in.
Walking and biking
๐ก Lit streets after sunset
After the real local sunset, walks and rides prefer streets the map marks as lit. Lighting isn't mapped everywhere, and the app says so: not every lit street is known.
๐ข Safe havens open now
Along a night walk, stores, pharmacies and gas stations that are open right now (by their listed hours), plus hospitals, police and fire stations. Places with unknown hours are never shown as open. Call ahead if unsure.
๐ Leave by dark
"Leave by 5:09 PM to finish before dark", based on sunset where you're going and how long the trip takes.
๐ธ Sidewalks and crosswalks
Walking routes stick to sidewalks, footpaths and crosswalks, and stay out of alleys and parking lots.
๐ณ Trails and bike lanes
Bike routes favor trails, bike lanes and quiet streets, and offer a calmer ride when one is only a little longer.
๐ฒ Walk with me link
Send someone a link so they can follow your walk live until you arrive. The link stops working 12 hours later.
Family and groups
โ Check on me and arrival alerts
Pick someone you trust. They get a link that follows your trip, and they're warned if you haven't arrived by your check-in time, even if your phone dies. Turn it on for every trip if you like.
๐ Teen-driver coaching
A weekly card for parents with a safe-driving score, drives, miles, minutes over the limit, hard brakes and phone use, compared with last week. Teens get streaks and badges. Never a live map; both agree first, and either can stop.
๐ Caravans
Everyone in the group on one map, with alerts when someone pulls off, regroup points, stop votes and a roll call.
๐ฒ Share trip
Send a live link with your arrival time. It disappears 12 hours later.
Trucks and deliveries
๐ Routes that fit your truck
Enter your truck's height, weight, length and axles. Routes avoid low bridges, weight limits and roads closed to trucks, where the map has them. Always obey posted clearance and weight signs.
โฃ๏ธ Hazmat routing
Mark a hazardous load and routes avoid roads where hazmat isn't allowed, where the map records it.
๐ Dispatcher view
Drivers join one caravan. A dispatcher sees every truck's delivery, arrival time and due time as On time, At risk or Late.

Questions
Is Hopalong free?
Yes. Safe routes, SOS, Check on me, road reports, caravans and campus safety are free, always. A Family plan with teen-driver coaching and arrival alerts is coming; everything is free while we test.
Does it sell my location?
No, never. Your location stays on your phone unless you choose to share it, and sharing stops when you stop it. No ads, no trackers. See the privacy page.
Where does it work?
Routes, SOS, caravans and Check on me work in all 50 states and DC. Town-level safety colors are filling in state by state as each state's FBI crime data arrives, with street-level detail in Pittsburgh, Philadelphia and Allentown so far. The data page lists every source.
Can we road trip together?
Yes. One person starts a caravan and shares a 6-letter code. Everyone who joins sees each other on one map, gets an alert if someone pulls off, and can set a regroup point or vote on the next stop. Sharing stops when you leave the caravan.
Is a "safe" route guaranteed?
No route is. Colors show reported incidents and crashes, and the app says when data is limited. Always follow signs and trust your instincts.
Does SOS call 911 for me?
No. It opens your phone's own call or text with your address ready. You place the call.
